Grammar review
The Grammar review section is meant to be a review of material that has already been taught. Review the comparative form of adjectives. Demonstrate how the comparative is formed with one-syllable and some two- syllable words and how it is formed with words of two or more syllables. Point out that the comparative form of adjectives is followed by than and the second item being compared. Have learners use the comparative to write sentences about old homes and new homes.

Answers will vary.

Writing
Use the questions provided to prompt a discussion of homes in the United States versus homes in the learners’ native countries. Write adjectives on the board as learners describe the differences. Have the class read the directions to the writing activity on
the next page. After they have made a list of differences and similarities, ask learners to write a paragraph on this topic.

Comparing two things or two groups of things

The comparative degree of one-syllable adjectives is formed by adding er.

One-syllable comparative = adjective + er
Example: (small–smaller)
Town houses are smaller than Victorian houses.

The comparative degree of adjectives with more than two syllables is formed by using more.

More than two syllables = more + adjective
Example: (expensive–more expensive)
Large houses are more expensive than small houses.

The comparative form of all adjectives is followed by than plus the second item being compared.

Use the comparative degree of adjectives to write sentences about the differences between old homes and new homes.
