Writing with vocabulary words
Ask students to complete the Vocabulary check individually and then discuss the answers as a group. Try to clear up any misunderstandings
students may have about the uses of any of the household items mentioned.

Talk about it
Ask students to discuss in small groups additional things people might want to know about their new home or their new neighborhood. There are many additional things people might want to know. Here are a few suggestions.

1. The history of the house. Some sellers may have documents describing the history of the house, particularly if the house is an older one. They may also have pictures of the house before it was renovated. These pictures may be valuable in planning future
renovations or repairs.

2. A history of the neighborhood. Many neighborhoods have fascinating histories. You may want to call your local librarian to see if there are any books about the neighborhood, or talk with seniors who live in the
neighborhood to find out its history.

3. Cultural activities. Some neighborhoods have a rich cultural heritage.
Are there local spots where a certain kind of music is played? Playing fields well known for their sports events? Community centers that have a special focus? There may be many things about a community of which members are especially proud. Ask your students if this is true of their neighborhoods.

  • Location of shopping mall, museums, art galleries, community swimming pool
  • Is roof original or replaced? If replaced, when?
  • When was house last painted?
  • How old is the carpet?
  • Have there been plumbing problems?
  • Are there leaks in basement?
  • How old is siding?
  • When were central heating and air conditioning last
    serviced?
