Comprehension check
Ask students to complete the comprehension exercise. Discuss
the responses with the class.
Talk about it
1. Have students work individually to fill out their housing
wish list. Tell them to add in the Other
spaces any additional features that are important
to them. After they are finished, place students in pairs
and ask them to describe their wish list to their classmates.
2. Discuss the difference between wants and
needs. We all may dream of certain features
in a home, but realistically we may not be able to afford
everything we want. Have
the pairs divide the items on their checklists into a Wants
column and a Needs column.
Extension activity
Conduct a survey using the collected wish lists
as data. Use the following steps:
1. Copy the chart with boxes for choices onto the blackboard
or chart paper.
2. Find out how many people want a new house. Write that
number in the box. Then ask how many prefer an older home
and write that number in the box.
3. Continue down the list, adding categories for the number
of bedrooms and bathrooms people want.
4. After you are finished, discuss your findings. Were
there any results that surprised you?
