What if I don’t want
to choose a party?

  • You don’t have to choose a political party when you register to vote. You can just check the box “Decline to State.”

  • Registered voters who do not choose a party are sometimes called “independents” or “nonpartisans.”

  • In some cases, if you do not choose a party you will not be able to vote on party candidates in a Primary Election.

What is a Primary Election?

The Primary Election helps parties pick the candidates they want to run for each office in the General Election.

In the Primary Election, in most cases, you can only vote for candidates from your own political party. In the General Election, you can vote for candidates from any party.

Statewide elections are usually held every other year (2004, 2006, 2008, etc.). There is a Primary Election in the spring and a General Election in the fall.
