November 12, 2004:
Planning the Cruise

Marta Torres points to the map showing the area of the ocean where the team will be doing its work in December

It takes a lot of planning to organize a research cruise. The scientists need to have everything with them that they will use for their research. Once the ship leaves port, it doesn’t return for any items that have been forgotten!

Bob Collier and Marta Torres, the principal investigators for this cruise, met with Linda Hobson and Marian Tyson, the two teachers who are going to sea with the scientists. The teachers had a lot of forms to fill out, because it is necessary to have a lot of information about each person going on the cruise. Bob and Marta also explained the science background for the cruise.

Erica McQuay, a graduate student, was on the 2003 cruise to the same part of the Pacific Ocean where the team will go in December, 2004. Erica gave Marian and Linda a packing list of the clothing they will need to take with them on the ship.
