Underway

Richard unpacking supplies that were loaded onto the ship

Everything must be tied down in case of rough weather.

The white arrow shows the location of the New Horizon, as seen from space.

This morning the New Horizon left its port at Scripps Institute of Oceanography in San Diego and is making way for the Gulf of California. Before leaving port, however, a number of preparations had to be made, both by the crew and support staff at Scripps and by the scientists participating. Preparations began many months ago, to allow time to coordinate the schedule and gather, order, and organize the supplies required for every aspect of all the 16 days of the trip. Ziploc baggies, chemicals, sample labels, instruments, plastic containers, and pen and paper are some items shipped by the scientists. The ship is supplied with such things as onboard instruments, food, linens, fuel, cleaning supplies, and—most importantly—fresh water, which all must be arranged for before the scientists arrive.

Q: Consider a typical day for you: pick three of your favorite activities. For each one, what sort of tools do you use, and what’s required to use them? If you had to complete each task in a foreign location, what sort of considerations/preparations would you have to make (for example, shipping, power supply, personal needs)? What’s one item that you must have? How could you improvise if you forgot this item?
