The Teacher at Sea
By Kathleen Salinas

The New Horizon went to sea
The crew, the scientists, and me
A teacher, now at sea

Like students in a class
My job is to listen, learn, and raise my hand
I ask questions to understand
How, what, why, and when?

Working together to get the job done
Learning to be part of a science team
A partnership for success

Writing journals to you from me
About what is seen and learned
Writing to teach about the sea

Dolphins, whales, sea lions, and otters
Seagulls, pelicans, and the little yellow shore bird
I’ve seen a wonderful show of mammals and birds

Ocean is home to so much life
Giant-like whales that weigh a ton
Small little zooplankton

Plants and animals living at sea
An awesome web of life
A place to enjoy, a place to learn
For you and for everyone

Living and breathing
Takes many words to describe
A world just right for life

Always asking
Ever learning
How, what, why, when?
