Ocean Science Links

Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences
The Bigelow lab offers many online activities leading to the understanding of ocean processes. Try “Hatch to Catch”, “Cycling through the Food Web”, and “Toxic & Harmful Algal Blooms”.

BRIDGE
This website gives teachers links to online resources for marine science education. There are lesson plans for biology, physics, geology, chemistry, climate, and technology—all related to the world’s oceans. Data Tips provide opportunities to use near real-time data sets for math instruction.

C.O.O.L Classroom
The C.O.O.L Classroom has a collection of interdisciplinary science activities using data from the Coastal Ocean Observatory Laboratory of Rutgers Marine and Coastal Sciences. Start with the C.O.O.L Projects, http://www.coolclassroom.org/cool_projects/coolprojects.html In “Continuous vs. Discrete Data”, try to figure out what has happened by looking at a series of still photos. Then, watch a continuous video clip of the same action to see if new information now leads to different conclusions.

Dive & Discover
This site allows you to join scientists as they use submersible vehicles to dive thousands of meters toward the ocean floor. You will explore underwater volcanoes, black smokers, and “bizarre creatures” living at these depths. Send email to scientists on current expeditions, or participate in activities archived from past cruises.

Estuaries.gov
An estuary can be a bay, a slough, or a lagoon. Find out more about these interesting habitats. The teacher’s guide contains many hands-on explorations.

National Marine Educators Association (NMEA)
This organization brings together those interested in the study and enjoyment of the world of water, both fresh and salt. NMEA publishes Current: The Journal of Marine Education.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Home Page (NOAA)
This organization’s homepage has links to news, weather, data, and many other resources. Try these shortcuts:

NOAA Ocean Explorer
This site provides a gateway to ocean explorations through links to actual research expeditions. View images, animations, and videos. The site has over 130 lesson plans related to research expeditions.

Oceans Alive
This site is produced by the Boston Museum of Science, a member of the Science Learning Network. Investigate the sections “The Water Planet,” “Oceans in Motion,” and “Life in the Sea” for information, visuals, and hands-on activities. The ”Web of Life” is an activity demonstrating “the balance of life in the ocean.”

Virtual Biomes
What’s a biome? This site has links to information and activities connected to marine ecosystems, freshwater ecosystems, and six biomes on land.
