Overview of Healthy Connections Study Circle: Linking ESL Curriculum, Immigrant Wellness, and Transnational Identity

Study Circle Goals:
- To build a regional network for increased collaboration between adult ESL and health partners, resource sharing, and on-going professional development focused on learner-centered ESL curriculum development
- To promote awareness within the adult ESL field about transnational health issues and implications for adult ESL/literacy classrooms
- To prepare adult ESL practitioners to help their learners develop skills and strategies for staying healthy and accessing preventive health information
- To develop and disseminate adult ESL curricular materials that combine English language instruction with health literacy skill development and critical health content, e.g., disease prevention and management, access to care
Key Study Circle activities:
- Facilitated discussions of readings related immigrant health issues and implications for adult ESL instruction
- Learners’ Lives as Curriculum™ workshop facilitated by Dr. Gail Weinstein (San Francisco State University)
- Development of original adult ESL lessons focused on lead poisoning prevention, or related health topic
Note: Through a generous grant from The Public Health Trust, there are no fees to participate in the Healthy Connections Study Circle in Spring 2009. Participants who are interested in developing lead-focused ESL curriculum materials are eligible for a stipend which covers mileage costs and thanks them for their support and commitment to immigrant wellness.
