Grammar review
Have learners look at the box under Grammar review. Point out that the simple present tense is used in the if clause, and the future tense is used in the main clause when the situation is true in the present and will possibly happen in the future. Also demonstrate that the position of the two clauses can be reversed. Demonstrate how the sentences can be rewritten by using the example in the box.

Answers

1. If Manuel collects records of cancelled checks or makes copies of monthly bills, he will show that he pays his bills on time.

2. If the Moreaus start saving money in a savings account, they will be able to buy a house someday.

3. If Fred has a good credit report, he will get a loan to buy a car.

4. If Tran pays his Excellent Credit Card bill, he will improve his credit rating.

Writing
Explain that learners can get their own credit reports from a credit reporting agency. Most companies charge a fee for credit reports. You or your class may have to call around to find one that doesn’t. The company
will probably want to have the individual’s complete name, social security number, and address. Many of these companies have a tape-recorded message with instructions on how to request the information.

Unit 1 : Lesson 3: Your credit report

Grammar review printer

A conditional sentence has two clauses, a dependent clause beginning with if and
a main clause.

Real conditional — the situation is true in the present and will possibly happen in the future. Use the simple present tense in the “if clause” and the simple future tense in the main clause.

Example: If you apply for a mortgage loan, the mortgage lender will send for your credit report.

Combine the sentences using the real conditional.

Example: Mr. Nguyen wants to have a good credit rating. Then he should pay his bills on time.

If Mr. Nguyen pays his bills on time, he will have a good credit rating.

1. Manuel wants to show that he pays his bills on time. Then he should collect records
of cancelled checks or make copies of monthly bills.

3. Fred wants to get a loan to buy a car. Then he should have a good credit report.

4. Tran wants to improve his credit rating. Then he should pay his Excellent Credit Card bill.

Some credit reporting agencies will not charge you for a credit report. Find one in the yellow pages of your phone book under “Credit Reporting Agencies.” Then, write a short letter to the agency to request your credit report.
