Dear Friends, There is much anticipation as we edge closer to the new millennium. All of us here at the Day Home are very excited to be embarking on a Capital Campaign to support a comprehensive Master Plan that will expand the Day Home facility to meet the demands of the growing number of families who need quality, accessible child care and early education. The Plan currently includes the creation of additional space to accommodate approximately 50 more children, the development of a Family Literacy Center and the steps necessary to make the Day Home accessible for all children. As you know, for single and low-income parents, accessible child care can often mean the difference between working and unemployment. Whether due to limited availability or affordability, it is estimated that only half of California families are getting the child care they need. Further, data indicates that 290,000 child care slots will be needed to accommodate children during the first year of Welfare Reform in California. Former welfare recipients are likely to return to the workforce at entry-level, minimum-wage positions. In Alameda county, where average child care costs can equal 80 percent of minimum wage salary, child care will be unaffordable unless a place like Saint Vincent's has space available. Our long and rich history gives us the confidence to meet the challenges before us. Please join with us, as we take up the challenge to be Year 2000 Ready for children. It is through your support and interest that the great work that began on October 16, 1911 continues.Thank you for joining us in helping to make a difference.
