USERS GROUP

The State Collaborative Literacy Council and the SLRC Program maintain close contacts with the needs and realities of local programs through their field advisory group. This 32 member USERS Group represents all types of literacy providers in the state. It meets regularly to advise the Council and SLRC as to how best to fulfill the literacy goals for California.

Council members and local agencies nominate representatives to the group. Six of the seven Collaborative Council members/agencies and the ex officio Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) representative each nominate three USERS Group members from their own local programs. The Governor"s office nominates two adult new readers. Three members are selected to represent social services agencies. The remaining six slots are filled by individuals representing specific types of CBOs, Latino (2), African-American (1), Asian (1), homeless (1), and rehabilitation (1).

The USERS Group meets regularly (3 - 4 times per year). All expenses associated with participation in USERS Group meetings are covered by the SLRC program. The meetings are typically held for one full day. All State Collaborative Literacy Council members participate in the meetings. Most meetings are held in Sacramento but some are held elsewhere in conjunction with another meeting or conference which some members may be already attending.

The members of the USERS Group advise the Collaborative Council on numerous matters pertaining to the State Literacy Resource Center program and adult and family literacy in the state. They are seen as a vital link between the state and regional level centers and the local providers who are actually direct users of the SLRC program. They are the field level advisory group for the State Literacy Resource Center Program.
