Special Online Discussion Regarding
Adult Literacy Standards for Science
February 26 - March 23, 2001

The NIFL Science & Numeracy Special Collection, in cooperation with the Numeracy Discussion list, is pleased to announce an online discussion of issues dealing with adult literacy standards for science. The discussion will begin on February 26, 2001. Those who are interested may continue to comment directly on the whiteboard until March 23, 2001. All responses will be posted, but not in real time. This is not a "real-time" chat.

We begin the discussion on the Numeracy list because math is a basic tool of science, used for measuring and analyzing data; organizing and communicating ideas; and generally helping to make sense of the world. In addition, math taught in the context of science can allow learners to see real-world connections to the math they are learning.

Discussion leaders are Judy Titzel and Cara (Streck) Anaam of World Education. Judy, Cara, and a team of practitioners are working on the revision of Massachusetts ABE science standards, and they are soliciting the thoughts of teachers and students regarding the science content and skills that adult learners need to be successful in their life roles.

Please join this discussion! A science background is not necessary, just an interest in integrating science content into adult literacy work.
