Manager/Administrator
Program managers provide invaluable assistance to instructors and
learners as they seek to integrate science and math into adult basic
skills development classes. This assistance takes many forms, including
the provision of professional development activities. The intent
of this section of the Science and Numeracy Special Collection is
to provide administrators with a list of important science and numeracy
education information and professional development opportunities.
For additional information, see the section on Organizations
and Associations and Science
and Numeracy Education Standards.
Adult Numeracy Network (ANN)
ANN
is community of instructors and administrators dedicated to quality
mathematics instruction at the adult level. As an affiliate group
of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, ANN conducts
an annual meeting at the same time and place as the annual NCTM
meeting. For information about this year's meeting, check the website.
Eisenhower National Clearinghouse
for Math and Science Education
The ENC has several sections of particular interest to program
administrators, including
Professional Resources
National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA) Education
Programs
The NASA Education Program provides educators with extensive
resources in a variety of media, including print, video, and online
materials. NASA also offers many
valuable workshops for teachers.
National Council of Teachers of
Mathematics (NCTM)
NCTM sponsors regional and national annual meetings. The meetings provide excellent professional development opportunities and resources for adult numeracy instructors. NCTM also provides an extensive set of publications about standards and best teaching practices http://nctm.org/standards/
National
Science Education Standards
This project was directed and approved by the National Research
Council, whose members are drawn from the National Academy of Sciences,
the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine.
Major sections of the Standards deal with standards in content,
teaching, assessment, and professional development. The standards
in professional development provide the rationale for assisting
instructors to have "
the on-going, in-depth kinds of
learning opportunities that are required by and available to all
professionals."
National Science Teachers Association
(NSTA)
"Promoting excellence and innovation in science teaching
and learning for all" NSTA presents a series of regional conventions
as well as the annual national convention. Information about these
conventions can be found here.
Science
Education Events
NSTA also maintains this list of workshops and other professional
development activities.
Project 2061--Science Literacy
for a Changing Future
Project 2061 of the American Association for the Advancement
of Science is a long-term initiative to reform science education
nationwide. Its resources provide programs with important information
about implementing science education. These include:
Benchmarks
for Science Literacy
Blueprints
for Reform
Resources for Science Literacy: Professional Development (CD-ROM)
