Nancy Markus
Nancy Markus is a Math Consultant for the Ohio Literacy Resource
Center and teaches elementary and middle school math at Solomon
Schechter Day School of Cleveland. She has spent the past 13 years
working in adult education, as a teacher and trainer. As the Math
Consultant for the Ohio Literacy Resource Center, Nancy has been
active in staff development initiatives at the state and national
levels.
Nancy is a founding member, past president, and current secretary
of the Adult Numeracy Network. This groups mission statement,
adopted in March 1994 is Nancys mission also: "We are
a community dedicated to quality mathematics instruction at the
adult level. We support each other, encourage collaboration and
leadership, and we influence policy and practice in adult math instruction."
She has presented extensively at the national level.
In Ohio, Nancy is the founder of the Ohio Mathematical Planning
Committee. She served as the convener of the Ohio Study Group for
the ANPN planning grant for adult numeracy standards and reform
in mathematics instruction, funded by the National Institute for
Literacy, which was part of the Equipped for the Future initiative.
She also was an Ohio representative for the "Worker Role development
project" in this same initiative. She was a team member of
an Ohio Department of Education "Math Proficiency Project",
writing materials for primary teachers of Ohio. Nancy writes a newsletter
for the adult education teachers of Ohio and is the moderator of
a new electronic list for that group.
Nancy is a graduate of Case Western Reserve University, B.A. Natural
Sciences. summa cum laude, and B.S. Elementary Education, summa
cum laude., Phi Beta Kappa. She received her Master of Education
in Math Education from Kent State University.
Nancy loves mathematics, reading, gardening, knitting, traveling,
walking, and life in general!
