PREPARING A TAX RETURN
Getting Ready
You can choose to fill out your own tax return or have someone help you. If you get help, you are still legally responsible for whatever gets sent to the IRS in your name. Here is a tax preparation checklist:
- Blank income tax form and instructions (use the 1040 if you need to itemize deductions or the 1040 EZ if you don’t)
- Your social security number
- Pencil
- Calculator
- W-2 forms
- 1099 forms
- List of income and expenses
- Copy of last year's tax return
If it applies:
- Your child care provider’s tax ID or Social Security number
- Mortgage interest: Form 1098
- Student loan interest paid
- Retirement contributions

If you have a simple tax situation, you may be able to file by phone (Tele-Filing). If you have less than $50,000 in taxable income, no dependents and a touch tone phone, you may be able to use Tele-Filing.
