My 2 Cents

"for anyone to get into my account."

ATMS (Automated Teller Machines)

You can do your banking at any hour of the day or night. Even if your bank is closed, an ATM is always open. An ATM can be used for making deposits, getting cash and checking your account balance.

To use an ATM, your bank will give you:

  • An ATM card
  • A PIN (personal identification number)

You put your ATM card in the machine and enter your PIN number on the keypad. Then you make choices on the screen for what you want to do. Be sure to get a receipt.

ATM Tips

  • You can change your PIN number to something easy for you to remember (but do not choose your birthday or phone number since someone trying to steal your card will try those first).

  • Most ATMs give money only in amounts of $20 (for example: $40, $60)

  • There is usually no charge to use your bank’s ATM.  If you use another bank’s ATM, there will probably be a fee.

  • Some accounts limit how many times you can use an ATM each month.

  • Keep your receipts from the ATM.  Write the deposit or withdrawal in your check register.

ATM Safety

  • Do not use an ATM alone at night. If you have to use one at night, find one that is well-lit and in a busy location.

  • Look around to make sure no one is watching you use the ATM.

  • Do not give anyone your PIN.

  • Keep your PIN number in your head; do not keep your PIN in your wallet.
Always remember to take your card and receipt from the machine.
