Punta
Arenas, Chile
Punta
Arenas is the capital city of Chiles Region XII, the Magallanes
Region. Punta Arenas can be found on a map at approximately 54°
South, 71° West. This port city lies along the historic Straits
of Magellan at the foot of the Chilean Andes mountain range. The city
can be reached by air and sea, or by road through Argentina. Before
the Panama Canal was built, this city was an important port as ships
went around Cape Horn to get from Europe or the eastern part of North
America to the west coast of North America and on to Asia.
Punta Arenas
is the gateway city for all scientists going to Palmer Station. It is
here that people are issued their "extreme cold weather"(ECW)
clothing that they will need on board ship and while at Palmer Station.
Travel to Palmer Station is usually via the R/V
Laurence M. Gould.
