| Babies are learning about themselves. Scientists
tried this experiment: They put babies in front of mirrors. After
looking at themselves, they were moved. A red dot was put on each
baby's nose. They are then put back in front of the mirrors. At 6
months, babies may not notice the red dot. At 1 year, babies look
carefully at the red dot. At 15 months, they try to rub the dot off
the nose in the mirror. At 18 months, babies try to rub the dot of
their own noses. |
Make your baby a peek-a-boo mirror. Tape
a cloth on a mirror. Sit with your baby on your lap. Say, Where
is (baby's name)? Lift the cloth and say, here (baby's
name) is. |
| This example shows how a baby begins to understand
that he is a person. |
Make a face puzzle. Draw a smiling face on
cardboard. Cut it in half horizontally. Show baby her face in the
mirror. Name her eyes, nose, and mouth. Show baby the puzzle. Point
out the eyes, nose and mouth. Take away half and ask what is missing.
Let baby put the puzzle together. |
