IS
THERE EVER "TOO MUCH" SUNLIGHT IN OREGON?
An
investigation into ultraviolet radiation
By Susan Cowles, Linn-Benton Community
College
Skillbuilding:
- Using
Internet-based resources
- Reading and
constructing charts, tables, diagrams, maps, and
graphs
- Math
problem-solving
- Communication
- Interpreting
data
Objectives:
Given resources for information about ultraviolet
radiation, the learner will:
- read,
construct, and interpret charts, tables,
diagrams, maps, and graphs;
- calculate
measures of central tendency (mean, median, and
mode);
- analyze
data;
- read and
summarize information;
- compare data
from several sources;
- apply
information to new situations.
Description of
Activities:
Learners are given
Uniform Resource Locators (urls) for websites
containing information about ultraviolet radiation
in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand.
Using these Internet-based resources, learners can
complete a series of activities. These are designed
to be done by individuals or small groups,
utilizing reading, writing, and math skills. There
are many choices within activities. While the
activities do not need to be completed in sequence,
the activities progress from simple to more complex
and open-ended. Each activity may be printed out
for use as a working guide.
Resources:
Activity Sheets 1-5
(Activities 6 and 7 link directly to online
activities produced by other organizations). Each
activity contains a list of related Internet
links.
