STICKING YOUR TOE IN THE PACIFIC OCEAN
By Beth Hubbard, Oregon Coast Community College

Skillbuilding:

  • Learning to learn
  • Using technology
  • Communication
  • Calculating

Objectives: Given URLs, the learner will be able to:

  1. Collect information about temperatures of the Pacific Ocean.
  2. Understand the literal and technical meanings of the terms "El Nino" and "La Nina".
  3. List two ways that each event affects weather in the Pacific Northwest.
  4. Relate changes in ocean temperatures to marine life, recreation, development, and tourism in Oregon.
  5. Communicate this information with others.

Description of Activity:

Learners are given Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) for websites containing information about ocean temperatures, and the unusual temperature conditions called El Nino and La Nina. Using these resources, learners complete a series of activities. The activities can be done by individuals or small groups. They have been designed for GED students and require them to use reading, math, and writing skills. In order to convert several Celsius temperatures to Fahrenheit, students can choose to use conversion formulas and carry out calculations themselves or to use a website that calculates the conversions automatically. Students should print out the activity for use as a worksheet while they complete the directions. The lesson concludes with several open-ended questions that might be used as research assignments or class discussion.
