Weather LINKS

Oregonians, Compare Our Weather
to Other Sites Around the World!

By Carolyn Gardner, Linn-Benton Community College

Skillbuilding:

  • Using the Internet
  • Learning about Internet reference sources
  • Recording data
  • Following directions
  • Developing a global conception

Objectives: Given activities and resources, the learner will be able to:

  1. find and record weather data
  2. convert time
  3. locate cities in the world with similar weather to that of Oregon
  4. convert temperatures from Fahrenheit to Celsius.
  5. do mathematical calculations with internet data and to record it accurately.
This is designed to be an independent activity, but students need to pay careful attention to detail. The weather comparisons will vary according to the cities chosen and the time of the year. Students need to use a variety of Internet or classroom tools and to do some mathematical calculations in order to record the data.

Description of Activity:

The results of this research will vary according to the sites chosen. Students will locate the weather for their own city, find the latitude and then search for cities elsewhere in the world at the same latitude. They should be encouraged to find cities in both hemispheres. Web sites for reference tools have been given so that students can look up the information necessary to define latitude and to locate the cities. If the download of maps is too slow, the student may choose to use a classroom globe, atlas, or a CD-Rom atlas.

The weather reports that we are using give EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) and Fahrenheit temperatures. To create a better global understanding and to make the data more meaningful, students are asked to convert the times the temperatures are given to the local time. Another reference tool has been given. Students may need some help in learning how to convert time by using the time zone map. Since temperatures in other parts of the world are often given in Celsius, students are asked to convert the temperatures from Fahrenheit to Celsius.

At the beginning of this activity, the student should print out the worksheet to record answers during the activity.
