WHAT'S SO GREAT ABOUT THE
DESERT, WHEN I PREFER THE COAST?
A comparison of Newport and Hermiston, Oregon.
By Jeannie Lockwood, Blue Mountain Community College

Skillbuilding:

  • Using Internet-based resources
  • Reading and constructing charts, tables, diagrams, maps, and graphs
  • Math problem-solving
  • Communication
  • Interpreting data

Objectives: Given Internet resources, groups of learners will

  1. describe the weather in their locale;
  2. use Internet search engines as a means of up-to-date research;
  3. investigate weather throughout Oregon;
  4. work cooperatively in pairs;
  5. communicate via e-mail to learners living in a different Oregon climate;
  6. investigate the agriculture and resources of their own areas
  7. share their knowledge with others by writing a brief essay;
  8. draw and interpret graphs;
  9. calculate mean and median by use of weather temperature data.

Description of Activity:

Instructors from two distinct geographical locations teamed up to implement this activity. Groups of learners living in each of the two areas then communicated with each other via e-mail. In our case, we represented a group of learners living in coastal Oregon (Newport) and in the high desert area of eastern Oregon (Hermiston). Learners investigated their own areas for information about weather, climate, natural resources, crops, flora, and fauna. They then exchanged information and asked questions about the other geographical site.

Adult learners are encouraged to keep a journal for a month that details the high and low temperatures for their cities. At the end of the month, these temperatures are totaled and used to calculate mean and median temperatures. Also, these journal entries can be used to draw graphs that reflect the high and low temperatures for the month. Also, television stations in Tri-Cities seek volunteer weather correspondents from towns such as Hermiston, Stanfield, and Umatilla to track weather in their respective towns. It is hoped that some of our learners will want to volunteer for this activity.
