About ninety rune percent (99%) of our students use English as a second language. They are raised in an environment where a language other than English is dominant.

About 2/3 of them (69%) learn English early in life. They learned to speak English when they started schooling; the other 24% have very little English in school and the remaining 7% did not have English until they came Saipan.

This various levels of English proficiency is a challenge to the program. We have materials from entry to the English language up to the secondary level English. In addition to these, our instructors have good materials which they have used in other classes. These, they use to supplement the materials we have.

Equally important in choosing the materials for the various levels of English proficiency is the content of the materials. The content have to be selected with a high degree of sensitivity to the cultural background of the students.

We are in the process of putting together materials for the three levels of English as a second language. These are:

a.) Beginning ESL at the entry level.
This will teach the student reading and writing the alphabet, reading, writing and understanding one syllable words, writing and reading Numbers from 1-100.

b.) ESL at the middle level.
This will be continuation of the beginning level. The student will be reading and writing and carrying on a conversation using common day to day words, write simple sentences, put together simple paragraphs.

c.) ESL at the Advanced Level.
The student will be able to read and understand and write more complex sentences. The student will be able to write a good essay.

The program believes that in order for our students to fully benefit from the program developing skills in reading, writing in the English language is basic. Because of this, the program offers opportunities for the student to learn these basic skills along with mathematics, social studies and science. The subjects planned and offered all work towards the goals of adult education which are: be a good parent, a good citizen and a successful worker.
