NEEDS ASSESSMENTTOPIC AREA:This is discussed on pages 3 and 4 of the State Plan. Institutionalized Adults I. Division of Youth Services (DYS) Division of Youth Services maintains a Youth facility. A couple of years ago before the closing and subsequent renovation of the youth detention center, we enrolled 6 young folks. They were taking basic English and basic Mathematics in addition to pre-vocational education courses. The facility is now fixed, there is one inmate who needs ABE services. We are looking into the possibility of bringing the youth to attend classes at the college or bring a tutor to the facility. We are looking for a tutor for the inmate. ABE has a continuing memorandum of Agreement with the Division of youth affairs. II. Division of Corrections (DOC) Our records showed the 35 of 50 inmates are without a high school diploma upon being admitted in this facility. That's 70% of local inmates, and 5% of the population enrolled for the purpose of achieving their high school diploma. When the ABE/GED established its on-going services to inmates at the Division of Correction, the enrollment number was 6. However, in the latter part of the '80s and the early part of the '90s 4 inmates achieved their diploma. To this day the number of enrollment had risen to 16. Four of the 16 students requested tutor in Mathematics, English reading and Writing. From basic English' basic Mathematics, Social Studies and Science, English Literature courses were offered to the inmates. Introduction to computers (Macintosh) was also available to inmates. However, the computer lab at NMC was utilized. In addition, vocational education was once offered to those having interests in Electricity, Carpentry, Masonry or Construction. Some inmates who received their high school equivalency diploma took courses in Vocational Education at the college, some went into majoring academic courses in Liberal arts and achieved in both programs, AA in Voc. Ed. and in Liberal Arts. In this facility, an inmate who has achieved an AA in Liberal Arts and an honor in Vocational Education major is now tutoring ABE students at the facility. This inmate has conducted tutorial session since September of 1995. Four inmates took the GED battery tests and one had passed while two are awaiting for the results of the tests, and one needs to take the courses all over again. This inmate has requested for higher level of education in business or in education. However, such arrangement is not possible.
The Joeten-Kiyu Public Mobile Library has added a stop at the Division of Correction for inmates to borrow books. This has been possible thru the ABE/GED services stepping stone to enhance education at the Division of Correction. |
