CURRICULAR OFFERINGS DESCRIBED
The Adult Basic Education Program curricular offerings are divided into four (4) levels. The first level includes ESL and literacy for the non-English speakers. The second level offers the "basic" courses which roughly correspond to the elementary education. The third and next general level offered is the pre-GED level, generally encompassing junior high school subject level material. The pre-GED is divided into the five (5) subjects covered by the advanced GED segment, i.e., English grammar through elemental mechanics and structure; Mathematics through fractions; Science, Social Studies, and Reading again in an elemental way. The final level is the GED itself. This level corresponds to high school equivalent material and includes material of a relatively sophisticated nature: English grammar and composition including intense essay writing practice; Mathematics through basic Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry; Science, Social Studies, and Literature of deeper and more intense nature.
In the final level, the GED, understanding the nature of "test taking" is given due importance. We believe that students benefit in a positive way from learning how to deal with tests that not only test knowledge levels in a particular subject, but also in knowing how to think and evaluate the questioning process.
Placement in all four levels is determined by assessment testing both before and after-actual courses are undertaken by the student.
