This web site contains information for all California counties. The figures represented are county level projections of data collected in California as part of the National Adult Literacy Survey. Data compiled by the Educational Testing Service on behalf of the National Center for Education Statistics of the U.S. Department of Education. California findings were based on a sample of 2,665 individual surveyed within the State in 1992. Using factors developed by ETS, survey results were weighted to represent the literacy status of approximately 22,817,791 Californians.
In developing this report, projected survey responses for 24 ethnic, gender and age groupings has been displayed. These data represent a projection of survey responser in each of the categories projected to county level population counts from the STF3a Table P-14 census distribution. Users should be aware that while useful for coparison, needs analysis or planning purposes, projection data of this sort is subject to severe limitations in absolute accuracy. While figures for largers groups -- specific age groups, or entire gender groups -- probably have a reasonable level of accuracy, there are likely to be high levels of error within compound groups. The data for these compound groups -- for example, Hispanic, males under 35 -- has been displayed, but is for purposes of illustration only. In general, there are not sufficient cases within each of these compound groups to permit accurate statistical characterization of responses to the various questions asked on the Adult Literacy Survey.
Projected responses for various counties are displayed for the following questions, and provides both a projected count and percentage for each response.
