WINGS is a state-funded demonstration family literacy project, a partnership
between the Department of Education and the Governor's Office of children
and Youth. It is an intergenerational program which brings parents and their
preschool-aged children to Waialua Elementary School three days a week to
participate in learning activities both individually and together. The children
receive an excellent early childhood education while their parents sharpen
skills in language, mathematics and reading (getting a high school diploma
if desired). Parents also spend time in the children's classrooms to participate
in literacy activities with their children. Parents are able to develop
a social network while remaining actively involved in the care of their
children. |
