Introducing the concepts
1. Introduce the concept of budgeting. Ask how many students
currently keep a household budget. What do they find helpful
about keeping a budget? What is the most difficult thing
about keeping and living within a budget? Describe your
own experiences with budgeting.
2. Ask students to make a list of reasons why it might
be a good idea to make and keep a budget. Ask them to suggest
other ways to put away regular savings without keeping a
budget (e.g., having money taken out of your paycheck automatically).
3. Explain to students that they will be reading one example
of how a family came up with a creative solution to their
goal of having a home sometime in the future. Ask them to
be thinking about other solutions that might work either
for themselves or for people they know.
Saving for a home
Read about the plans Joe and Teresa Ramirez made to buy
a home. Discuss the story with your students.
1. After doing their first household budget, how do you
think they felt?
2. Do you think moving in with Teresas family is
a good solution to Joe and Teresas problem? Why? Why
not?
3. What else might Joe and Teresa do to save money for
a house instead of moving in with Teresas parents?
4. What were the advantages for Joe and Teresa of preparing
a household budget that included setting savings goals for
the long-term future?
5. Many families would not be able to buy a home without
the help of family members. Sometimes parents will help
their children by paying for part of the down payment on
a house. Other times they may become co-borrowers, buying
a house with their son or daughter. What examples do you
know of families whose members have helped one another in
housing purchases?
6. Teresas father and mother were able to pay off
their house by the time they retired. What are the advantages
of being able to do this? How is buying
a home a built-in retirement plan?
7. Teresa is part of a strong extended family. What are
the advantages of being part of this kind of family? What
are the disadvantages?
