My Friendships
By Ross MacIntosh
I don't have a lot of friends, but I keep them for a
long time. Don was my high school buddy, and Peter has
been my buddy for at least ten years. In addition to
these main friendships, I have other friends that I have
met through social groups. All my friendships are
important to me and I try to take care of them.
What I like about Don and Peter
Don and I played a few games of cards between classes
and on the weekends. We would spend a lot of time
together playing boardgames as well as a few hands of
cards during the summer. We check out the movies. The
best thing about him was that he was good at all kinds of
ball games. After high school, we would get together from
time to time, either at my place or at his place to go
bicycling or to play games and watch movies. In 1984, he
moved to Kansas, and now we keep in touch by postcards
about three times a year or by a phone call every couple
of years to catch up on what's going on in each other's
lives. He has had some problems. For about ten years, he
was an alcoholic and drug addict, but in the last five
years, he has gone through rehabilitation, and now like
the rest of us, is doing the nine to five, routine.
In 1985 I joined the social group known as the Omega
Club, A.K.A. the Young Adults, where I met Peter, and we
hit it off really well. From then on, we took eight
Cosmos tour vacations together.
We like the same movies and playing board games as
well as going to various shows. We even like to check out
San Jose Live Sports Bar or go to concerts of various
types. We just have a lot of fun, but he too has
problems. He is always one hour late for whatever
activity we are interested in doing for the weekend.
Plus, he doesn't always take showers before coming or
going from various social activities.
When Peter and I were at Jan & Carla's apartment
for dinner, the three of us were starting with one
serving per person. Peter took three servings. We chewed
him out for that.
He is a very good driver and used to drive the
Stanford Book Store Truck all over the Stanford campus,
not to mention we would have fun going to plays together,
among other things. We would have fun just doing things
together like traveling both inside California and all
over the United States for vacations. Our last vacation
was to Atlanta, Georgia on August 6th through August
17th, 1997.
