Many have heard about Y2K. What does zero-zero mean? Then we heard about September 9th, 1999.

Some older computers might read 9-9-99 and think it is the end of a program. This might shut something down. It could be the northwest electric grid of the Bonneville Power Administration.

Everyone was watching. At Bonneville and most places in the United States and Canada, September 9th caused no problems.

The only problem was a telephone call. This call asked for the power grid to be shut down. This grid is one of the biggest in the country. The bright operator changed the power route and quickly fixed the problem.

The US energy secretary said that Bonneville and the nation is almost ready for January 1, 2000.

He said that 9-9-99 was never a serious concern. It showed that the nation's electric companies are ready for Y2K. He did admit that one percent of the electric companies aren't ready.
