Exxon Valdez Oil Spill 10 Years Later From a news story by CNN San Francisco Reporter Don Knapp March 24, 1999

I. On March 24, 1989, the Exxon Valdez spilled approximately eleven million gallons of crude oil in Prince William Sound, Alaska.

A. Now there are measures to prevent future oil spills

B. There are no guarantees against another oil spill.

C. Exxon spent two billion dollars in clean-up costs and spent 300 million dollars in compensation.

II. The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council was formed after the oil spill.

A. This Trustee Council has found that Prince William Sound is on a long road to recovery.

B. This decision has angered Exxon and environmentalists

1. Exxon says that Prince William Sound is a healthy ecosystem.

2. Environmentalists say that the sound has not recovered.

III. Ten years later, there are a few conclusions about the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

A. Exxon has recovered financially.

B. Among the 28 animal species being monitored, only two species have qualified as "recovered".
