Black Panther Dispute

I. Bobby Seale helped start the Black Panthers.

A. Huey Newton was the other cofounder.
B. The Black Panthers started in the 1960’s.
C. Seale was a revolutionary then.
D. He wanted to overthrow the American government.

II. Black Panthers in the sixties were very active.

A. Panthers were in shoot-outs with the police.
B. They set up health clinics.
C. Programs to help the poor and minorities were their focus.
D. The Black Panthers often made the national news.

III. Today there is a new group of Black Panthers.

A. Malik Shabazz leads the New Black Panthers.
B. Shabazz is a lawyer in Washington, DC.
C. His group protests at the Holocaust Museum.
D. He calls Zionism an evil philosophy and religion.
E. New Black Panthers feed the poor and teach self-defense.

IV. The original Black Panthers are upset with the New Panther Party.

A. They are suing the New Black Panthers in federal court.
B. The suit claims trademark infringement.
C. Seale says the new group is nothing like his Black Panthers.
D. Five years ago, Seale’s group won a previous suit.

V. Malik Shabazz’s Panthers says the lawsuit is frivolous.

A. According to Shabazz, it is the people’s party.
B. He says the Black Panthers should support them.
C. Shabazz thinks Seale’s group is jealous.
D. The original Black Panthers were much worse, he claims.

VI. David Hilliard and others argue with Shabazz.

A. Hilliard says they were never anti-Semitic.
B. Shabazz recalls the 1967 march on the California State Capitol.
C. Then Black Panthers took weapons into the legislature.
D. They were arrested for disturbing the peace.
E. Today young blacks are taking a stand in their cities.
F. Hilliard and Seale say that’s fine but don’t use the Black Panther name.
