CALC's Learners come from many different backgrounds and ethnicities. We have had students from all over the world -- representing more than 25 countries.
Most of our Learners participate in beginning or intermediate literacy, GED preparation or English as a Second Language studies. They all use the computers as part of their individualized learning plans, work one-to-one with a tutor and sometimes in a small group. Peer tutoring is encouraged, and many of CALC's Volunteers started as students!
Additional students include Job Trainees (J/T's) and those who are short-term and learn only basic computer skills. As a J/T, the student works to improve his or her basic reading, writing, math, and computer skills. At the same time he or she provides volunteer help to CALC, wherein he or she learns basic clerical skills.
CALC typically assists 100 - 120 Learners per year, with approximately 50 active on a regular basis.
Our featured Learners this quarter are three of the seven new readers who have been working hard to write our "Talking Story - Hilo Style" book. The book is made up of seven short stories, written especially for adults who are just learning to read. Be sure to check it out "Talking Story - Hilo Style", along with their personal comments regarding the project.

I have been coming to the learning center for 24 months. I am a new reader. Now that I have learned to read and write, I would like to tell everyone! I am 51 years old. My hobbies are fishing and diving. Now that I know how to read and write, I think that they are my hobbies, too.

I am a new reader. I like to go to church to help them. I put food in packages. I like to help feed the poor. I like to be at the door to welcome the people in. I also like to help with the babies. I am often at my mom's house, at church, or else out. I feel better now, living by my mom so that I can help her, now that she is getting old. I feel real happy to be helping other people.

My world came to a stop in 1994, but it has been opening more and more since then. I am a 56 year old woman and am doing well now. I was always looking for answers and for someone to help and teach me. It was very hard at first, but now I can see the words and the letters are not moving around too much anymore.
