Tutor Tip of the Month

Reading Changes Lives

In 2006, a major motion picture was made about a teacher and her students. The film was based on a true story of a class in Long Beach, California. In this class, a new teacher had students who lived in dangerous areas, regularly witnessed violence, and were considered by the school to be “unteachable.” By empowering the students to write their own stories and exposing them to books by real people to whom they could relate, the teacher, Erin Gruwell, gave the students the tools, encouragement, and desire to challenge societal expectations and succeed.
