You deserve to
be understood and to understand!
California Literacy
has a program devoted to health literacy. The California Health Literacy
Initiatives goal is to inform and partner with individuals and
organizations to craft collective, lasting solutions which will positively
impact the health and well-being of individuals with low-literacy skills,
their families, and their communities. This plan for California will
serve as a groundbreaking, national model for health literacy; currently,
no statewide efforts of such complexity are being undertaken.
Simply put, health
literacy is the ability to read, understand and act upon health information.
Because much health information is not presented in plain language,
individuals with lower literacy skills or knowledge of healthcare encounter
barriers to following instructions, taking preventative care measures,
and accessing services.
The California
Health Literacy Initiative website has resources for tutors, learners
and the public to understand health literacy and practice self-advocacy.
