Adult Numeracy Network
11th Annual Meeting
Saturday, April 9, 2005, Anaheim, CA

An Invitation… Come join this full-day institute, designed for experienced as well as novice teachers and staff developers who work in ABE, GED, ESOL, and developmental college programs.  The meeting will focus, in a hands-on way, on critical issues as well as instructional strategies for a high-quality adult mathematics classroom.

A little history… The Adult Numeracy Network (ANN) traditionally holds its annual meeting in conjunction with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Annual Meeting. This year the NCTM meeting will be held on April 6-9 in the Anaheim Convention Center and the ANN meeting will be held on April 9 in the meeting rooms of North Orange County Community College District School of Continuing Education in Anaheim.

A unique opportunity... By meeting in various regions of the country over the years, the ANN tries to expand and strengthen our network by offering an exciting (yet inexpensive) staff development opportunity for adult education teachers, especially those from neighboring states.  Teachers can learn from the expertise in the K-12 math education community at a wide range of excellent sessions at the NCTM meeting.  These sessions are complemented by the presentations Saturday at the ANN meeting that approach the issues and ideas from an adult education perspective. This year’s NCTM theme Embracing Mathematical Diversity is a theme adult educators are well informed about.  We teach a diverse student body and our practitioners teach in diverse settings of workplace, correctional facilities, community colleges, etc.

For information about hotels and the NCTM Meeting, April 6-9, go to the NCTM website.

COABE NATIONAL CONFERENCE 2005
MAY 4-7, 2005, ANAHEIM, CA

This year ANN will present various numeracy topics within the COABE National Conference schedule.  For more information, go to the COABE National Conference web-site.

ANN Member goes to the Antarctica

Adult educator Susan Cowles of Linn-Benton Community College in Corvallis, Oregon joined a team of environmentalists exploring persistent environmental pollutants in coastal seas of Antarctica during 2002. Her travel from January 2 to March 3 was supported by "Teachers Experiencing Antarctica and the Arctic (TEA)" a program of the National Science Foundation. You can read about Susan's experience through her journals at Polar Science Home Page . It also provides online science and numeracy resources as well as curricular materials for teachers, tutors and learners.

NIFL LINCS Content Development Partners includes combined Science and Numeracy Special Collection.

The Science & Numeracy Special Collection is maintained by Western/Pacific LINCS in California by Susan Cowles, an ANN member and past president of the Network. This LINCS Content Development Partner is one of nine grants by The National Institute for Literacy (NIFL), in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Vocational and Adult Education (OVAE).

New Board of Directors elected at Seventh Annual Adult Numeracy Network Meeting --- April 2001 in Memphis, TN.

The Adults Learning Mathematics (ALM-7) Conference ---July 6-8, 2000 on the Tufts University Campus (near Boston, MA, USA).

ANN gets a new name and a new affiliation -- the Adult Numeracy Network, an affiliate of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.

ANN and The Math Learning Center hosted Visual Math Workshops for Adult Basic Education in Providence, RI (June 1998) and Portland, OR (July 1998)
