Drawing Shapes to aid Basic ESL Listening

“Draw a long zig-zag line....”

The technique of drawing simple pictures and instructing students how to draw them is familiar to ESL teachers. I organize the vocabulary for this lesson so that it can be completed by even the most basic students. Place all these shapes and vocabulary words on the board. Check for comprehension and pronunciation as you draw.

Draw a....

Prepare a simple drawing using the geometric shapes on the board. Don't show the drawing to the students.

Examples:

Tell the students how to draw the picture.
Be sure to use only the words on the board.

Examples:

Draw a long horizontal line at the top of the page.

Draw a vertical rectangle on the left of the page.

Draw a circle at the bottom of the page.

Draw a circle at the top on the left of the page.

Draw a diagonal line inside the circle.

Draw a circle at the top on the right of the page.

Draw a triangle in the middle of the page.

Draw a long zig-zag line at the bottom of the page.

Students compare their drawings to yours.
Next, students give instructions to the class with drawings of their own. They can follow the sentence order as it is written on the board.

This lesson works well with even the most basic students if you control the vocabulary. More advanced students can use more shapes and instructions.
